Annie Kao (she/her)
Background
My name is Annie Kao (she/her), and I am an Intern Counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre. I am a first-generation Taiwanese Canadian and I grew up between Taipei, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. Currently, I am a Master of Counseling student at City University. Before embarking on this counseling journey, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UBC and spent over 13 years in the corporate world specializing in strategic sourcing. I have always been passionate about helping others and serving my community. My personal struggles during my early years of parenting initiated a path of healing and shifted my focus in life. During the pandemic, I started to feel disconnected from the corporate values in my environment, so I decided to slow down and pursue a career where I can make meaningful connections with people. I am a mother to a vibrant little boy and a cat mom to my 7-year-old kitty. In my spare time, I enjoy making pottery, reading, and traveling.
My diverse life experiences have shaped my identities and informed the perspectives I bring into my work. I believe in the inherent strength and profound capacity for growth within individuals. Recognizing the complexities and challenges of being human, I appreciate the various nuanced perspectives individuals bring. In counseling, I offer compassion and a deep appreciation for the collective human experience. I honor the diverse abilities and identities that enter this space, holding reverence and humility for your journey.
Therapeutic Approach
My therapeutic approach is warm, light hearted, and guided by curiosity. My priority is to create an open, honest space that fosters safety. I emphasize compassion, personal agency, and connection in my work. I aim to empower you to uncover your resilience through self-compassion and awareness. When working with me, you can expect an engaged and collaborative approach. I am here to meet you where you are and help you understand yourself that allows you to create a story that lives your values and truth.
The modalities I draw from are relational, strength based, and person centered. I recognize and acknowledge the various barriers and vulnerabilities that folks have experienced and am committed to work with you from a trauma informed, justice oriented approach. I draw from various theories such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Internal Family Systems theory.
