Kudret Sekhon (she/her)

Kudret Sekhon

Background

My name is Kudret Sekhon (she/her) and I’m a registered clinical counsellor at Avery Therapy Centre. I’m a second generation-immigrant and have called Vancouver my home all my life. I’ve experienced environments where seeking resources at this capacity was seen as taboo or ignored which motivated me to pursue a career where that cycle could be broken. I have been heavily involved in the non-profit sector serving an array of individuals, families, and youth in multiple settings who were experiencing stressors or trauma, creating barriers which impacted their ability to participate in life at the fullest potential. Through a self-reflection journey from these experiences, I fostered a passion to be in a helping profession that valued, heard, and respected individual and group voices. I strive to create collaborative relationships that heal and alleviate these barriers where client stories and experiences are at the core of the relationship.

Academically I hold a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences from Simon Fraser University and a master’s degree in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. I’m able to speak and understand Punjabi fluently. Outside of counselling and learning, you can find me enjoying walks with my dog, catching up on a book or show, and trying new food places all over town.

Therapeutic Approach

I draw from a humanistic person-centered therapeutic approach where my priority is to provide a compassionate, safe, and clarifying environment where your strengths and resiliency are celebrated. Therapy looks different for everyone. I intend to honour your unique lived experiences and create a collaborative relationship that explores what the therapeutic journey looks like for you while integrating an intersectional, trauma-informed, and culturally aware framework. My approach will allow goals to be created that are feasible, accessible, and allows for autonomy in the goal making process. As a therapist I strive to build a pillar of trust where I can guide and provide you with tools to navigate whatever you might be facing and feel
empowered.

I will also incorporate other modalities to support your needs such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Adlerian Therapy (goal orientated), and Mindfulness. Ultimately, I aim to tailor and create unique treatment plans and frame therapeutic sessions that support your needs and allows for a non-judgmental space to explore the inner workings of yourself. I’m looking forward to working with you and giving space for your journey!

“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying 'Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner'. I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” – Carl Rogers
